Trial Layout of Rail
2/19/02
OK, we've added rail, motive power and rolling stock, as a trial layout. It looks crude because it is. It'll all be straight and properly connected when the track gets laid out for real. I'm still debating on whether or not to replace the Marklin turnouts with the beautiful ones from Halwa, but I think the expense is going to stop that "dead in it's tracks." Not only would I have to replace the turnouts, but all the visble track as well, as they just don't quite match up well enough visually. I haven't made a final decision, (I haven't priced it all up yet) but it looks like Marklin for now at least.
It's a bit fuzzy, but that's 22,000 horsepower pulling that intermodal/oiler train.
A little different angle, in the background is an Amtrak cross-country passenger train.
A common sight here in the West, but not in Z-scale! Since the merger you often see 4-5 C-44s of both SP and UP colors pulling a L-O-N-G train of intermodals or oilers.
A better overhead view showing the Gunderson stack cars from FF in Germany, and the Eastbound Amtrak Sunset Limited.
Zipping through the desert, passengers enjoy the view, and a cool beverage.
An older SP GP38 pushes a run of coal hoppers into position for the next rail barge.
In the background you can see a BN GP38 shoving some stock cars up a side rail.
This old station is going to be replaced with a whole new office tower/shopping and station complex to support this growing city. There's hardly room for the Westbound Sunset limited and two high-speed inter-city expresses.
